SYDNEY
More than 125 people from across Atlantic Canada took part in a three-day workshop which focused on building sustainable communities.
The workshop, hosted by the Atlantic Coastal Action Program (ACAP) Cape Breton, was attended by representatives from the 14 ACAP sites in the region and other community organizations.
The event, called the Sustainable Communities Workshop, wrapped up Friday after three days of panel discus- sions, speeches and workshops.
Judy McMullen, program coordinator for ACAP Cape Breton, said the workshop made for interesting and meaningful discussions.
"We tried to do (cover) a good range of topics," she said.
Among the topics discussed were: the development of a sustainable community vision, sustainable community economic development, connecting environment and health, measuring progress towards sustainability, supporting healthy community, and success stories from groups that have effectively linked the environment, economy, and society with an ecosystem approach.
Workshop delegates also had the opportunity to take a tour of the Muggah Creek Watershed remediation project.
McMullen said the aim of the workshop was to provide realistic ideas and suggestions that representatives could bring back to their respective communities.
