"The strongest interest to develop an index has been expressed by local communities who are urgently looking for ways to assess their well-being accurately and to measure progress genuinely. Currently GPI is conducting two experimental community studies, one in the urban area of Glace Bay, Cape Breton and the other in the rural area of King's County. The Glace Bay venture has been accepted favourably by the community who see this as a "kind of report card on the sustainability and future of their town."
"The GPI is looking at a variety of things including health care, volunteerism, crime rates, and safety in two community pilot projects taking place in Glace Bay and Kings County."
"What is the GPI? And what will it reveal to area residents about their communities? These questions will be answered by a comprehensive survey of 2,000 randomly selected households across Kings County. The next phase of the survey has begun, with a member of the research team contacting each household. They are asking for permission to arrange appointments to discuss survey questions and explain how to complete the survey package."

Survey to measure peace, security and well-being in Kings County
"The peace, security and well being enjoyed by Kings County residents will be measured and quantified over the next few months. Kings County Citizens for Community Development and GPI Atlantic, a non-profit research group, launched the 2001 Kings County Well-being Survey on April 20."
"Is Kings County a good place to live?
A local organization will try to answer that question through an ambitious survey designed to measure community peace, security and well being.
Kings Citizens for Community Development drafted the 50-page survey over two years through consultation with Statistics Canada and collaboration with 40 other community groups."
"The Genuine Progress Index Atlantic, a non-profit research and community development group, will receive $255,000 over three years for its project Creating a Peaceful and Secure Society: A Community Pilot Project in Rural Kings County and Industrial Cape Breton. The three- phase project will collect information about crime; make proposals to deal with crime's causes and consequences; and develop a handbook, video and other educational materials."
