The percentage of adults in Alberta, Nova Scotia, and Quebec who are overweight has more than doubled since 1985. Bottom line: more than 1,500 Albertans, 1,000 Nova Scotians, and 4,000 Quebeckers die each year from illnesses caused in part by their excessive weight, according to GPI Atlantic, a non-profit research group in Tantallon, Nova Scotia. "To turn around this increase," says GPI Atlantic's Ron Colman, "we have to recognize that junk food, physical inactivity, and rising stress rates are as toxic and costly as tobacco."
