GPI Atlantic worked with the Centre for Bhutan Studies (CBS) in the initial design of its national Gross National Happiness (GNH) survey and database. Please see Bhutan studies and Gross National Happiness for details of the CBS work, GNH Index, and survey results.
Since 2011, GPI Atlantic has worked closely with Bhutan’s National Statistics Bureau and Gross National Happiness Commission on the design and construction of new National Accounts that account for the value of natural, social/cultural, and human capital in addition to the manufactured and financial capital conventionally measured. An overview of the new National Accounts along with the first results (prepared by Drs. Robert Costanza and Ida Kubiszewski and senior GPI Atlantic researcher Karen Hayward), and a statement by Bhutan’s Prime Minister, Jigmi Y. Thinley, were released in February 2012.
