In response to requests, GPI Atlantic has in recent years undertaken a wide range of projects in the Himalayan Kingdom of Bhutan, which is seeking to harmonize sustainable and equitable socio-economic development with environmental conservation, cultural promotion, and good governance. That holistic development philosophy, which is very much in line with GPI Atlantic’s own integrative approach, was first expressed 40 years ago in the Fourth King of Bhutan’s now famous proclamation that “Gross National Happiness is more important than Gross National Product.” GPI Atlantic activities in Bhutan, kindly funded by the International Development Research Centre, Alerce Trust, and Maitri Trust, fall into seven broad categories:
